Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and Cap Ferrat: A Complete Guide

Between the bays of Villefranche and Beaulieu, on the narrowest point of the Cap Ferrat peninsula, Béatrice de Rothschild built a rose-coloured villa surrounded by nine gardens and filled it with the art of five centuries. Today the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is the most visited house-museum on the French Riviera, yet most people stay barely an hour before driving on. It deserves a full morning — and the peninsula around it, with its coastal path, harbour and quiet swimming coves, easily fills the rest of the day.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild — A Pink Palace Between Two Seas

Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild bought this ridge of rock in 1905 and spent seven years turning it into a Venetian-inspired palace, reportedly rejecting a dozen architectural plans before she was satisfied. The colour was chosen to glow at sunset, the site so that the sea would be visible from both sides at once. She left the villa and its collections to the Académie des Beaux-Arts on her death in 1934, which is why it survives complete rather than divided between heirs.

Inside the Villa

The ground floor is kept as she lived in it: a covered patio with Renaissance columns, Savonnerie carpets, Sèvres and Vincennes porcelain, Tiepolo ceilings, and furniture that belonged to Marie-Antoinette. Upstairs, rooms that were once private apartments hold her collections of Chinese lacquer, Impressionist paintings and rare drawings. Photography without flash is allowed; an audio guide is included with the ticket and is worth the extra time.

Nine Gardens and the Musical Fountains

The grounds are laid out like the deck of a ship — Béatrice reportedly had her gardeners wear sailors' berets — with a central French garden running down to a Temple of Love, and eight more around it: Spanish, Florentine, stone, Japanese, exotic, Provençal, a rose garden and a lapidary garden. Every twenty minutes the fountains of the main basin play to music, a short show that children in particular enjoy. Late March to early June is the peak of the flowering; the rose garden peaks again in September.

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat Beyond the Villa

The village itself is a working harbour with a handful of terraces looking at the fishing boats and, beyond them, some of the most expensive real estate in Europe. Plage de Paloma on the eastern side and Plage de Passable facing Villefranche are the two accessible beaches, both with restaurants where booking is essential in summer. The Villa Santo Sospir, decorated by Jean Cocteau, and the seafront path below the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat complete the picture.

The Coastal Path

The sentier du littoral runs almost the whole way round the peninsula. The full circuit is about 11 kilometres and takes three hours; the shorter Pointe Saint-Hospice loop from Paloma beach takes under an hour and delivers the same views of Beaulieu, Èze and the Italian coast on a clear day. The path is rocky in places, with no shade in the middle of the day — good shoes and water matter more than anything else you carry.

Tickets, Timing and the Best Season

The villa is open daily, with shorter hours in winter and continuous opening in summer; tickets can be bought online to avoid the queue on cruise-ship days. Arriving at opening time, before ten o'clock, means the gardens almost to yourself. Coach groups and the midday heat both peak between noon and three. The tearoom on the terrace serves lunch with a view over the French garden and should be reserved on the same day you arrive.

Getting There with a Private Chauffeur

Cap Ferrat is fifteen minutes from Nice Airport by road, but parking at the villa is limited and the peninsula's narrow lanes fill quickly in season. A Mira Azur chauffeur collects you from the airport, Nice, Monaco or your hotel, drops you at the villa gates and waits or returns at an agreed time, so a visit can be combined with Villefranche, Èze or lunch in Beaulieu without watching the clock. The route is also a natural stop on a full-day private tour of the Riviera.
