Menton Travel Guide: Lemons, Gardens and the Last Town Before Italy

Menton sits in a natural amphitheatre between the mountains and the sea, half an hour east of Nice and two kilometres from the Italian border. Sheltered from the mistral, it is the mildest town in France — which is why lemons ripen here in winter, why British and Russian aristocrats wintered here in the nineteenth century, and why its gardens hold plants that survive nowhere else on the coast. It is also the quietest of the big Riviera towns: no casino crowds, no cruise terminal, just a pastel old town rising in steps above a curved bay.

The Old Town and the Sea Front

The old town climbs from the harbour in a tangle of ochre and pink houses linked by covered passages and stairways. The Rue Saint-Michel, a pedestrian street of orange trees and cafés, runs parallel to the beach and ends at the covered market, a Belle Epoque hall where local producers sell citrus, olive oil and Ligurian specialities every morning. The Promenade du Soleil follows the shingle beaches west towards Roquebrune.

Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange and the Parvis

The grand staircase from the seafront leads to the parvis of Saint-Michel, a paved square in black and white pebble mosaic with the baroque basilica on one side and a view straight down to the water. It is the setting for the Menton Music Festival every August, and the best place in town at sunset. The climb is about 100 steps; the lift beside the market is the alternative on a hot day.

The Cemetery of the Old Château

Above the basilica, the old castle cemetery is one of the most surprising places on the Riviera: terraces of nineteenth-century tombs of English, Russian, German and Dutch families who came to Menton for their health, with a panorama that reaches from Cap Martin to Bordighera in Italy. It is free, rarely visited, and worth the final flight of steps.

Gardens, Museums and the Lemon Festival

Menton's microclimate supports a string of remarkable gardens: the Serre de la Madone with its terraces of rare species, the Val Rahmeh botanical garden, the Fontana Rosa and the Jardin de Maria Serena. The Musée Jean Cocteau collections and the Salle des Mariages at the town hall, decorated by Cocteau himself, cover the artistic side. Several gardens can only be seen on guided visits booked in advance.

Fête du Citron

For two to three weeks from mid-February, the Lemon Festival fills the Biovès gardens with monumental sculptures built from tens of tonnes of citrus fruit, with parades along the seafront on Sundays. It draws around 200,000 visitors, so roads into town are closed or congested, parking disappears and hotels fill months ahead. Arriving by chauffeur with a drop-off point agreed in advance is the practical way in.

Beyond Menton: Italy in Ten Minutes

The border is at Ponte San Luigi, and Ventimiglia's Friday market — one of the largest street markets in Italy — is fifteen minutes by road. The Hanbury Botanical Gardens, Dolceacqua with its medieval bridge painted by Monet, and Bordighera's palm-lined seafront are all within half an hour. On the French side, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and its thousand-year-old olive tree lie between Menton and Monaco.

Getting to Menton with a Private Chauffeur

Menton is about 45 km from Nice Airport — typically 45 to 60 minutes along the A8, longer during the Lemon Festival or Monaco Grand Prix week. Trains are frequent but slow with luggage, and parking in the centre is difficult in season. A Mira Azur chauffeur meets you in the terminal, drives door to door at a fixed fare, and can build Menton into a day that also takes in Roquebrune, Monaco or the Italian border towns.
